Lift Off

This image was captured with an older Canon Power Shot S2 IS.  It was taken at Jumbo Reservoir east of Sterling, Colorado.  It was sometime in March of 2006 when the Snow Geese were migrating back north to their breeding grounds.  It was an incredible sight.  There were literally thousands of geese.  When I first approached the lake I thought that there was ice floating in the center.  It turned out to be all Snow Geese (Chen caerulescens).  Unfortunately the light wasn't great and I was limited with the camera I had so most of the pictures were less than spectacular.  This one did manage to capture the seer density of the birds in flight.  If only you could have heard all the noise.

One thing I learned that day was the importance of having your camera with you.  I was able to get several pictures of waterfowl but without the versatility and reach of an SLR they were mostly unusable.  You never know when something spectacular is going to happen so it's always a good idea to be prepared.
