Photographing People

People make very interesting subjects to photograph.  This couple was having a great time in the ocean but were very difficult to photograph due to the lighting.  If you look at the picture you can see the light is coming from the right side, leaving the left side in shadow.  By overexposing the image I was able to lighten up the left side considerably but still not enough.  A strong fill flash would have helped get a better exposure.

The image of a Mother and Daughter on the beach was taken under the same circumstances.  You can see how white the sand looks and still how much shadow there is on the subjects.  A flash would have helped here as well.  By overexposing I was able to get a much better image than if I had just relied on the cameras meter.

Expressive faces are great.  I love candid shots much more than posed studio portraits.  Formal portraits may make someone look really good but they often fail to tell us anything about them.  In this photo you can clearly see that the subject is trying to express something he is passionate about.

This image was take on a glass enclosed bridge.  The light was natural but slightly tinted by the glass.  The somewhat coy smile and gaze of the subject makes you wonder what she is looking at.  In a normal studio type of portrait lighting would have been added at least to left side of the subject to lighten the shadows.  I like how this turned out without the additional lighting.  It looks as if whatever she is looking at is making her glow.

Here we have the same subject but on a different day and in a different location.  Notice the difference in the skin tones.  Natural light can be a wonderful thing but at the same time it can be difficult to work with.  I find it easier to work with the light and take what you can get, so to speak.  If are trying to get the same type of results that can get in a controlled environment like a studio it can be very frustrating.
