I recently had the opportunity to work on a fun artistic shoot. It is always a pleasure to work with models that love modeling for artistic reasons and just for the fun of it. Whitney is one such model. Costumes and other fun things are Whitney's specialty. We decided to shoot an Alice in Wonderland theme and had a great time doing it. While this isn't a normal portfolio shoot it was a great opportunity to try something creative.

Recently I had the privilege of helping a new model develop her portfolio. In fact I was the first person she did a shoot with. The response was overwhelming. Within days of posting her new pictures on her Model Mayhem account the offers to do more shoots came rolling in.

For new models the best way to get a start is to book a session with a photographer that you like. Four or five great images is all you really need to get things rolling. High quality images are what photographers and other professionals look for when they view your portfolio. They want to see you and what you can do. Don't market yourself with low quality snapshots if you want to be taken seriously.

If you want to book Trade shoots with top photographers or paying jobs you need to put your best foot forward. That means being serious and professional in the way you look and act.

An Evening on Mt. Evans

Here are a few pictures from my recent trip to Mt. Evans. The weather was a real problem with it raining one minute and then hailing the next. Fortunately I was able to get some great shots and the clouds added to the mood making from some dramatic landscapes. Unfortunately a storm blew in and I was unable to get any of the sunset shots that I made the trip for. It also made for a very intense drive down the mountain at least until I descended below cloud level.

I've been trying to photograph Mountain Goats for awhile now with no luck. I lost all the images I had taken back when I was still using film. Seeing the Mountain Goats and getting a few good shots was a real bonus. The little one looked just like a child's stuffed animal. The adults were still shedding. Considering it will start snowing again in September it hardly seems worth it. I can't imagine a summer that only lasts around three months.

Where it all started - My first attempt at photographing wildlife. (1985)

I recently came across some old pictures of mine. One of the things that I found was my first attempt at wildlife photography. At the time I had no intentions of ever becoming a photographer and knew nothing about photography. What I did want to do was explore the world.

At a summer camp I attended, in 1985, in the Adirondacks I had my first opportunity to do some exploring without adults around. One of the campers and I grabbed a paddle boat and set off on Saranac Lake. Not long into our voyage I spotted a Blue Heron and decided that I wanted to get a picture of it.

Armed with my Kodak disc point and shoot camera and our bright yellow paddle boat we set off to get as close to the bird as possible. The following series of photos documents my attempt. Not very good to say the least but I still remember the rush I got from the attempt.

Only in the original photo can you even barely make out the Heron in the fist picture. So much for using a short fixed focal length lens.

The bird is actually visible here but it just looks like a stick in the center of the frame.

Guess what? Herons apparently don't like kids in bright yellow paddle boats chasing them. Either that or this just didn't want his picture taken.

This one would also count as one of my first pictures of birds in flight.

These are the original negatives from the disk film. It was great for kids because it was so easy to load and unload from the camera.

Amazing how photography has changed since 1985. It's even more amazing to think back on all the exploring I have done and all the things that I have been fortunate enough to photograph since then.

Woman - A Photographic Definition (Flickr Group)

I decided to add a new element to my project by inviting everyone to take part through a group on Flickr. www.flickr.com/groups/woman-definition/

It has been a great success so far. In less than 24 hours there are 83 members and over 300 photographs. It's truly a global project now with contributers form North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Women - The Definition Project

I am beginning work on a project that I have been thinking about for several years now. Essentially it is about women and every aspect about the lives of women. Have you ever wondered what makes women so interesting? Why do men as well as women like looking at women? I'm not talking about supermodels or famous actresses but rather the people you see in the grocery store, the mall or at work.
I'm talking about regular women, the ones that are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives and friends. You might say women in the raw, natural, real, honest and true. Simply women being themselves going about their daily lives.

It's the ordinary and extraordinary things that make women who and what they are. So is it the who or the what that makes women so interesting? I speculate its a little bit of both. We all know many women so the who part of the question is easy to answer. It's the what that is hard to answer.

The project looks at the individual (woman) in the context of the collective (women). It could be thought of as a photographic definition of women that is forever changing with the addition of new women. In this sense the individual (woman) helps define the collective (women). In turn it will look at how much the collective (women) defines the individual (woman).

I intend to show every aspect of what it is to be a woman by using glimpses of the lives of numerous women. Through this I hope to answer the questions who and what women are. Maybe then we will have a better idea about what it is that makes women so interesting.

Fun with Foxes - Canon G10 Wildlife Shots

I ran across some young playful foxes. Luckily I had my Canon G10 with me and I was able to get a few good shots for my stock collection and some fun ones as well. Here are a few of the interesting ones. Believe it or not these were actually taken in the middle of Denver on a vacant lot in a residential neighborhood. The G10's focal length was a limiting factors as to what I could do. The 14+ megapixils did allow for some heavy cropping and still left enough for a usable image. These won't make the stock catalog but they are still fun images to look at.
